Introduction to Nurse Leadership

1 CEU (NMBI) on completion

Hi, I’m Lisa Nolan and I was originally a nurse and midwife; now I’m a Healthcare Leadership and Resilience Coach.

I have created this short online Nurse Leadership Programme which goes through the reasons why effective nurse leadership is so important, what a clinical leader is (and who the clinical leaders are – how to spot them!) and leadership styles and how they are applicable in healthcare settings.  The programme is applicable to nurses and midwives at all levels and if you are registered in Ireland it’s worth 1 NMBI CEU.

There are two video versions of each module.  One version is me speaking to the camera so this will suit you if your learning style is auditory; the other shows slides as I’m speaking which may suit you if you prefer to read and listen at the same time.  You can watch both if you like, but you must watch at least one for each module in order to receive the CEU Certificate at the end.

You also need to complete the exercise sheets that accompany each part and e-mail them to me as evidence of your reflection on the topics covered. I will need your NMBI PIN number in order to produce your CEU Certificate so don’t forget to include that. My e-mail address is lisa [at] aslancoaching.ie and that’s where you need to send your completed exercises and reflection notes.

I hope these modules are helpful to you.  My phone number is 042-9692403 if you have any queries at all.

Your modules are on the left of your screen when you sign up and I’ll see you inside the programme!

About the instructor

Having first qualified as a general nurse and subsequently as a midwife, Lisa has worked in a diverse range of clinical settings including Beaumont Hospital Dublin, street clinics in Calcutta, King Edward VII Hospital and the Royal Marsden Clinic in London, and GP practices in Dublin. A move to the administrative side of healthcare included roles in the Blackrock Clinic, Lowell House, and the Irish Practice Nurses Association where she managed a successful application for charitable tax exemption, drafted governance policies for Board to approve, mentored rotating Board Members in their new roles and responsibilities, and coordinated clinical awards and bursaries.  She built a successful Virtual Assistance business before going on to qualify as a Business, Executive and Personal Coach.

Now a Resilience and Leadership Coach and Trainer, Lisa’s coaching practice is underpinned by her nursing background and knowledge of how physical and mental health is woven into every aspect of our personal and working lives.  She helps her clients recognise and manage stress, ground themselves and their leadership practices in their core values, reacquaint themselves with their life purpose, and design and implement meaningful changes that are embedded so that they will last long after the coaching process has ended. She helps clients to develop their personal resilience using their own physiology, research-based coaching techniques and evidence from studies in neuroscience. She uses various coaching models, including Micro-Resilience (proven, research-based tools and rejuvenating behaviours that take seconds to implement and lead to immediate results), Co-Active Coaching, Conversational Intelligence, and others. Her approach throughout her past nursing career and in her coaching practice now is one of 'unconditional positive regard' for her clients (ref: Carl Rogers).

She is on the Centre for School Leadership’s coaching panel for school leaders and her Leadership Development Coaching Programme for Nurses and Midwives has been accredited for 10.5 CEUs from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. She is an associate coach for Grace Consulting, providing Parenting/Returning to Work after Maternity Leave Programmes, Career and Executive Coaching.  She gives talks on resilience to community and patient groups, groups of employees in workplaces, at seminars and at networking meetings.  She co-facilitates peer group coaching supervision sessions with coach colleagues.

She has a special interest in health literacy and has contributed to nursing and medical journals, websites and blogs, writing about new approaches and technology that enhance health literacy.
